Safely clean black mold without worsening kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom dresser in our Jumeirah villa. It must have been growing since the humidity spiked last month. The wall feels damp and cold to the touch. What's the safest way to clean this myself without making their allergies worse?

Black mold in Dubai villas often appears on cold walls where condensation forms, especially during humid months when AC units work hardest. The damp, cold wall behind your dresser is a classic example. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself, but you must contain the spores to prevent them from spreading and worsening your children's coughs.
First, mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle; vinegar is effective on many common molds here and is less irritating than bleach. Before you start, ensure your kids and any pets are in another room with the door closed. Turn off the AC or fan in that bedroom to prevent air circulation. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Lightly mist the moldy area with the vinegar solution to dampen it and weigh down the spores. Gently scrub the area with a disposable cloth or brush, wiping all residue onto the cloth. Place all used cleaning materials in a sealed plastic bag immediately for disposal. After cleaning, use a dry cloth to wipe the wall and a hairdryer on a cool setting to thoroughly dry the area. This last step is critical—without removing the moisture source, it will return quickly. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or if the dampness persists after cleaning, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Recurring mold often indicates a hidden leak or significant condensation issue that needs to be addressed. A certified inspector can identify the exact species and its source, which is important when health symptoms are involved. |
