Is black mold in wardrobe making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the built-in wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in these black, powdery spots. The room has felt damp since the weather changed last month. Could this be toxic black mold and is it dangerous enough that I need to get my family out of the house right away?

Black mold on clothing in a wardrobe is a strong indicator of a high-humidity problem in that room, which is very common in Dubai's climate, especially during the transitional months. The damp feeling you've noticed is the key issue. While the term "toxic black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys chartarum, many black-colored molds can cause the symptoms you're describing.

Directly answering your concern: you do not likely need to evacuate immediately, but you should take swift and serious action. Continuous exposure to mold spores from any species is a known irritant and commonly causes persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms, particularly in children. The priority is to stop their exposure.

First, isolate the problem. Seal the affected wardrobe and do not disturb the mold further, as this will release more spores into the air. Keep the bedroom door closed, especially when the AC is off, and increase ventilation if possible. For the health of your family, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. An expert can identify the moisture source—often condensation from an AC supply line running through the ceiling void above the wardrobe or lack of ventilation—and take samples for a lab culture to accurately identify the mold type and concentration.

This is not a surface cleaning job. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials (like the affected clothes), HEPA vacuuming, and addressing the root moisture cause to prevent it from returning. In the UAE, reputable remediation providers should be able to outline a process aligned with IICRC standards and provide verification that the space is safe after cleanup.
