Could mold be causing my kids' month-long cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I’ve just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a bunch of jackets and shoes covered in black, fuzzy spots. The room has felt damp for ages. Could this mold be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and what’s the safest way to clean it all up?

Yes, mold could absolutely be the cause of your children's persistent cough. The black, fuzzy spots you've found are a clear sign of a moisture problem, and the dampness you've felt confirms it. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity meets year-round AC use, enclosed spaces like under-stair cupboards are prime locations for mold growth due to condensation and lack of airflow. The spores released by this mold are a common indoor irritant, leading to cold-like respiratory symptoms, constant coughing, and worsened allergies, especially in children.

The safest first step is to limit their exposure immediately. Keep the cupboard closed and avoid disturbing the area, as this will release more spores into your home's air. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach or simply wipe it away, as this often spreads the spores without addressing the root moisture problem.

For a situation of this scale, where items are already contaminated and health symptoms are present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact mold species and the source of the dampness—whether it's a hidden pipe leak, condensation from an AC duct, or humidity seepage—which is critical for a permanent solution. They will also safely contain and remove the contaminated materials, including those jackets and shoes, which are likely not salvageable.

Until a professional assessment, improve ventilation in the area as much as possible and use a dehumidifier to help lower the overall moisture level. Addressing the underlying cause is the only way to prevent it from returning.
