How to permanently remove bathroom mold in grout?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has black mold spots growing in the grout between the wall tiles, especially behind the toilet. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and I’m worried about it spreading. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in bathroom grout is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers. The most effective long-term solution requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture problem.

Start by cleaning the affected grout with a dedicated antifungal cleaner or a paste of baking soda and white vinegar. For stubborn growth, a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) applied carefully with a toothbrush can be effective. Always ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning.

However, killing the surface mold is only a temporary fix if the moisture issue remains. The permanent solution is to drastically reduce humidity. Run your bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you don't have a fan, open the window wide. Wiping down wet tiles and shower walls with a squeegee after use is one of the most effective habits to prevent regrowth. For persistent dampness, a portable dehumidifier can help maintain humidity levels below 50%, a point where mold struggles to grow.

In many JVC apartments, the mold behind the toilet is worsened by slow, hidden condensation leaks from the cistern or plumbing. Check for constant moisture on the pipes or wall. If the mold returns quickly despite these measures, the grout's integrity may be compromised, allowing moisture to seep into the wall substrate behind the tiles. In such cases, professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden water damage. Remediation may involve removing and replacing the degraded grout and any affected material behind it to achieve a permanent solution.
