How to remove black mold from bathroom ceiling corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It’s in a Jumeirah Lakes Towers apartment and the AC runs constantly, but the bathroom ventilation isn't great. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or is this something I absolutely need to get my building's maintenance to handle?

Black mold in bathroom ceiling corners is common in Dubai apartments due to high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. For a small patch under one square foot, you can handle this yourself safely.
First, ensure the area is dry. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle, or use a dedicated mold remover from a local supermarket. Spray generously, let it soak for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores. After cleaning, rinse the area with water and dry it thoroughly with a towel. The key is addressing the moisture source. Your poor ventilation is the main culprit. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and leave the bathroom door open to improve air circulation. Wiping down wet walls and the ceiling after use can also help. If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, involve building maintenance. Structural leaks from upstairs neighbors or within the AC ductwork are possible in JLT towers and require professional remediation. For persistent or hidden mold, a professional inspection with air or surface sampling can identify the species and source, which is critical for a permanent solution. |
