Removing black mold from shower ceiling in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It’s been really humid lately and I think the bathroom’s exhaust fan isn't strong enough. What’s the best way to safely remove this myself, or should I just call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

For a small patch under one square foot, you can handle this yourself safely. The key is to contain the spores. Before you start, seal off the bathroom from the rest of the house and wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Instead, use a dedicated mould remover solution or a mixture of white vinegar and water. Apply it, let it sit, then scrub the area. After cleaning, the surface must be completely dried to prevent immediate regrowth.
However, if the patch is larger than a square foot, has returned after previous cleaning, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, it's time for a professional assessment. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with potential condensation inside ceiling voids from AC ducting, often means the visible patch is just the surface issue. A proper inspection can determine if there is hidden moisture or mould growth within the ceiling or behind the tiles. For a long-term solution, improving ventilation is non-negotiable. Ensure your exhaust fan is actually venting to the outside and not just into the ceiling void, which is a common installation error here. Run the fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet surfaces and using a dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce the moisture that mould needs to grow. |
