AC leak causing mold and sickness: how urgent is cleanup?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a little for a while, but after the recent humidity, I've started seeing black spots on the wall behind the curtain. My husband and I have both had a persistent dry cough and itchy eyes for the last month that just won't go away. Is this likely from the mold and how urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned?

The black spots and your symptoms are almost certainly connected to the AC leak. In Dubai's high humidity, persistent moisture from a leak creates an ideal environment for mold growth, and the dry cough and itchy eyes are common reactions to the spores it releases.
This situation is urgent and requires immediate professional assessment. The visible spots are just the fruiting body; the actual fungal network can spread extensively behind the wall. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household products, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and worsen your exposure. A proper inspection involves using a moisture meter to map the full extent of water damage and often an air or tape-lift sample sent to a microbiology lab to identify the species. This is critical, as some molds are more problematic than others. For any visible growth exceeding roughly one square foot, or when health symptoms are present, Dubai Municipality guidelines strongly recommend professional remediation to ensure it is contained and removed correctly. The remediation process itself should include isolating the area with negative air pressure, physically removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, and using HEPA vacuuming and scrubbing. Simply spraying a biocide is insufficient. Until you can get a professional in, increase ventilation in the room as much as possible and avoid disturbing the moldy area. |
