Black mold behind dresser: DIY or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom dresser in our Jumeirah apartment. It's been so humid lately and I think it's been growing there for a while, but I only noticed it when I moved the furniture to clean. I'm worried about their health but also don't want to call a professional if it's something I can safely handle myself with bleach or vinegar.
Is this a DIY job or do I absolutely need to get professional mold remediation for something like this?

Black mold behind furniture in a Jumeirah apartment is a common issue due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The first step is to determine the extent. If the patch is smaller than a square meter and confined to a surface like drywall or paint, a careful DIY approach may be sufficient. However, if it has penetrated the wall or is on a porous material like untreated wood or insulation, professional assessment is strongly advised.
For a small surface patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar can be effective. Bleach is not recommended as it only lightens the color and does not address the root cause, and its fumes can be more irritating than the mold itself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source; this is often condensation from an AC unit or a lack of airflow behind the furniture. Given your children's coughing, this is not a situation to take lightly. The term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins and is more strongly linked to respiratory irritation. A professional inspection, which includes air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab, is the only way to confirm the species and the spore count in your air. This data is essential to understand the health risk and verify that remediation was successful. In Dubai, reputable remediators follow IICRC standards and provide documented proof of clearance. For health concerns with vulnerable individuals, erring on the side of professional assessment is the safest course. |
