Dehumidifier or moisture absorber for closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few small patches of black mold on some leather bags and shoes. It’s been humid lately and I think the lack of airflow is the problem. What’s the best way to prevent this from happening again, should I get a dehumidifier or those moisture absorber boxes?

For a small closet in Dubai's humidity, a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than disposable moisture absorber boxes. The boxes work for very small, sealed spaces but need frequent replacement and can't handle the high ambient moisture levels common here. A compact electric dehumidifier actively pulls more moisture from the air and is designed for the climate.
First, clean the existing mold with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold cleaner, wearing gloves and a mask. Dry the items completely in the sun if possible. For prevention, ensure the closet isn't overfilled and leave space between items for air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar for a few hours each day to disrupt the stagnant, humid air that mold thrives on. If the mold returns quickly or spreads, the issue might be more serious, like a hidden condensation leak from an AC pipe in the wall or under the floor. In such cases, a professional inspection with a thermal camera and moisture meter is needed to rule out a concealed water source, which no dehumidifier can solve. |
