Can I remove mold myself or hire professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe, probably from the last time our AC unit leaked. My wife is really worried about our toddler's allergies, so I need to get it sorted properly. Is this something I can treat myself with bleach, or should I hire a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and what’s a realistic cost for a small bedroom?

For a large patch behind a wardrobe from a known AC leak, professional remediation is strongly recommended, especially with a toddler in the home. The Dubai climate means high humidity and constant AC use can cause condensation issues, allowing hidden mold to thrive in wall cavities long after the initial leak is fixed.

A small surface patch might be manageable with a DIY approach using a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution (bleach only removes surface colour and doesn't kill the roots). However, your situation involves a large area and potential penetration into the drywall or behind it. Disturbing it improperly can release a significant number of spores into the air, worsening your toddler's allergy symptoms.

Professionals are necessary because they contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and, crucially, identify and rectify the moisture source—in this case, likely your AC drain line or condensate pan. They also dispose of contaminated materials like drywall or insulation according to local standards.

For a realistic cost expectation for a small bedroom, you should request assessments from several certified providers. The price is highly dependent on the extent of the damage behind the wall, which requires investigative opening of the affected area. Always ensure the company provides a detailed scope of work and, if needed, can arrange for third-party verification that the area is clear after remediation.
