How to treat black mold from damp wall and prevent return?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we finally moved that heavy piece of furniture. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the humidity is seeping in. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back, and should I call the building management about the possible damp wall?

Black mold behind furniture on an exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation or moisture intrusion, which is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. The first step is to call your building management immediately. Under Dubai regulations, the building owner is typically responsible for investigating and repairing structural dampness originating from the outside, such as a leaking pipe or failed waterproofing.
For immediate treatment, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water and scrub the visible mold off the wall. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and does not kill the root structure. After cleaning, let the area dry completely. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed. To prevent its return, the wall must be completely dry. Use a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is running efficiently to control humidity. Keep furniture a few inches away from exterior walls to improve air circulation. Since your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the mold species and the full extent of the moisture problem, which is often not visible. A lab test can confirm if the mold is a type known to cause irritation, which would guide the necessary remediation steps for your family's health. |
