How to remove black mold in damp bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside and the room always feels a bit damp. What's the most effective way to get rid of this myself, or should I just call the building management?

Black mold in a bedroom closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by thermal bridging. The outside heat transfers through the concrete, cooling the interior wall surface and causing condensation inside your closet, especially when the AC is running. Your first step is to call building management. Under Dubai regulations, structural issues leading to dampness, like a potential breach in the building's external waterproofing (IFA) or faulty seals, are typically the landlord's responsibility to address.
For immediate, small-scale removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move everything out of the closet. Scrub the affected area with a solution of detergent and water, then follow with a wipe-down using a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) to disinfect. Let the area dry completely. However, this only addresses the surface growth, not the moisture source. Given the persistent damp feeling, the wall cavity itself may be affected. DIY cleaning is often temporary. The most effective long-term solution requires a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation, capillary action, or a leak. They can use moisture meters to assess the wall's saturation level. Remediation usually involves drilling small holes to inject a specialized antifungal foam into the cavity to treat what you can't see, alongside correcting the underlying cause, like improving insulation or sealing. Without fixing the root cause, the mold will almost certainly return. |
