Is AC mold causing my kids' cough in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to suspect the AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. I noticed some black specks around the vent when I changed the filter last week, and the room has a damp smell that won't go away. Is this something I need to get an inspector for immediately, or can it wait a few weeks?

The damp smell and black specks around your AC vent are strong indicators of microbial growth, which is a common trigger for persistent coughing and irritation, especially in children. Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, moisture accumulates inside units, creating an ideal environment for mold.

For a child's persistent cough linked to a suspect AC unit, a professional inspection is recommended. An inspector can identify the species present—some are far more problematic than others—and pinpoint the moisture source. In many Jumeirah villas, this is often a clogged condensate drain line or insufficient insulation causing condensation.

You can check the condensate drain line yourself; ensure it is dripping water outside when the AC runs. If it's dry, that's likely the problem. However, visible growth inside the unit or ductwork requires professional assessment for proper remediation. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and a certified inspector will follow protocols to contain spores during inspection.

Waiting a few weeks could allow the issue to worsen, prolonging your children's exposure. The initial step is a visual inspection and possibly surface sampling to confirm the type and extent of growth, which guides the necessary response.
