Black mold in AC vent: DIY or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell every time it kicks on, and I just found some black spots along the edge of the vent in the master bedroom. I’ve tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

The black spots and damp smell indicate active mold growth inside the AC system, which is common in Dubai's humid climate where condensation constantly feeds it. Vinegar only addresses surface spots you can see, not the colony in the ductwork or evaporator coil.

For a single vent with minor, recurring spots, a thorough DIY cleaning with an EPA-approved mold cleaner can be attempted. You must wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, if the smell is strong or the spots return quickly, the source is likely deeper in the system.

Professional inspection is recommended here. Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for systemic mold issues. A proper inspection uses borescopes to view inside ducts and often includes air or swab sampling to identify the mold species, as some types require specific remediation protocols. This identifies the actual source and extent, which DIY cannot do. Look for a provider that can show documented evidence of the problem and explains a clear remediation plan, not just a surface cleaning.
