Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. It wasn't there during the last summer, but it's grown quite a bit since the recent humidity. Given how quickly it appeared, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a store-bought cleaner this weekend?

The rapid appearance of black mould on an exterior wall in Arabian Ranches points directly to condensation from thermal bridging, a common issue in Dubai villas. The wall's internal temperature is cooled by your AC, while the outside is heated by the sun, creating a perfect environment for condensation and mould growth when humidity is high.

For a patch you just discovered, you can attempt a DIY clean. Use a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover from a hardware store. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. However, this only addresses the surface growth, not the moisture source.

The critical step is to identify and stop the moisture. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan after cleaning. Move clothes away from the wall to improve air circulation and consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier in the closet space.

If the mould returns within a week, which is common in these scenarios, the problem is persistent and requires professional assessment. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact point of condensation within the wall cavity. Remediation then involves correcting the insulation issue and applying antimicrobial coatings to prevent recurrence. Given its location on a structural exterior wall and its rapid regrowth potential, a professional evaluation is strongly recommended to prevent it from spreading inside the wall.
