Mold behind wardrobe: urgent professional treatment or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha has had this damp, earthy smell since the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago. I just pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of a dinner plate behind it. The room doesn't feel particularly humid, but with them sleeping in there every night, I'm getting worried. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

Given Dubai's high humidity and the recent heavy rains, that damp smell and hidden mold growth behind the wardrobe is a common issue in villas. The fact that it's visible and has a noticeable odor means the colony is established.

For a patch that size, DIY is not recommended. Surface cleaning with vinegar may remove visible growth but won't address the moisture source or the hyphae (root network) within the porous wall material. In our climate, it will almost certainly return. More critically, disturbing it without proper containment and HEPA filtration can aerosolize spores throughout your children's bedroom, significantly increasing their exposure while they sleep.

The urgency is high due to the occupants. Children are more vulnerable to the irritants and allergens molds produce, which can exacerbate respiratory issues like asthma or cause persistent allergy symptoms. The priority is to identify and eliminate the moisture source. This is often condensation from an AC supply duct running in the wall, a small plumbing leak, or capillary rise from the foundation after rain—issues that require professional diagnosis.

A proper remediation should include isolating the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the underlying dampness. For a case like this in Al Barsha, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the wall's moisture content and provide a verified, lasting solution.
