Mold around AC vent: emergency or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell every time it turns on, and I've just noticed a few small black spots starting to form around the edge of the vent in the master bedroom. This has been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Given how quickly mold can spread here, is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

That damp smell and visible spots indicate active mold growth in your AC system, a common issue in Dubai's high humidity. Given the climate, this should be addressed promptly, but immediate emergency action isn't typically required if no one is experiencing severe respiratory symptoms.

The growth is likely due to condensation inside your ductwork or a clogged drain line, both exacerbated by our constant AC use. The visible spots are just the tip of the iceberg; the main colony is often hidden inside the unit or ducts. You can temporarily wipe the visible mold from the vent with a diluted bleach solution, but this is only a surface fix and won't stop the source.

For a proper resolution, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—be it a drainage issue, insulation problem, or unit malfunction. They can then perform a targeted cleaning of the internal components and ductwork. In many cases, this service includes before-and-after testing to verify the mold spore count has been measurably reduced.

While you can wait a few days, don't postpone it for weeks. Continuous exposure can worsen allergies and the problem will only spread further. Schedule an assessment for the weekend, but ensure the company you choose provides documented evidence of the contamination and its remediation, not just a visual cleaning.
