Is this mold dangerous and need a doctor?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the last couple of weeks, and I just found a bunch of black and greenish spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. Is this the kind of mold that’s really dangerous, and should I take my family to a doctor right away?

Visible mold growth of that size, especially when accompanied by persistent respiratory symptoms like coughing, should be taken seriously. The type of mold can only be confirmed through lab analysis, but black or greenish colonies in a humid bedroom are often Stachybotrys or Aspergillus species, which are known to produce irritants and allergens.
The recent high humidity is a key factor; it creates the perfect environment for dormant mold spores to flourish. Continuous exposure to these spores, particularly for children, can cause and exacerbate coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. It is advisable to consult a doctor to discuss these symptoms and the potential environmental trigger. They can assess your family's health and rule out other causes. For the home itself, a professional inspection is the necessary next step. They can identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC units, a leaking pipe, or humidity trapped by the wardrobe—and assess the full extent of the growth, which may be more widespread behind walls. DIY cleaning is not recommended for a colony of this suspected size, as improper handling can aerosolize a high volume of spores throughout your home. Remediation should be handled by certified professionals who will contain the area, remove the contaminated materials safely, and verify the air quality is restored through post-remediation testing. |
