Black mold on wall in humid villa - who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe. It's been really humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's gotten worse because we keep the AC off during the day to save money. What's the best way to handle this properly and who should I call to get it professionally assessed?

Black spots spreading on a wall behind furniture in a humid Dubai villa is a classic sign of a condensation and mould issue. Keeping the AC off during the day in our climate is a primary cause, as the unit cannot remove the ambient humidity, which then condenses on cooler surfaces like exterior walls. The wardrobe traps that moisture, creating the perfect environment for mould.

For a proper assessment, you need a professional mould inspection company. Do not call a general handyman or painter, as they will likely just wipe and paint over it, which will fail within months. A qualified inspector will use a moisture meter to find the exact source of the dampness and should take air and/or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species. This report is critical—it dictates the correct remediation protocol and verifies the work was done properly.

In Dubai, look for a provider with certifications like IICRC and one that operates its own microbiology lab, as this ensures they follow evidence-based protocols from start to finish. The remediation process should include containment of the area, HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, proper removal of contaminated materials, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobials.

After remediation, address the root cause. You must run your AC consistently, even at a higher temperature like 24-25°C, to control humidity. Consider using a dehumidifier in problematic rooms and ensure furniture is slightly pulled away from walls to improve air circulation.
