How to safely remove mold in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just found a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, but it must have been growing for a while. What’s the best way to handle this safely and permanently in our humid climate?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai's high humidity, mold grows from persistent dampness, often from a hidden leak or condensation buildup behind furniture against exterior walls. Check for leaking pipes, AC condensation drain blockages, or poor external wall sealing. Simply cleaning the visible growth is a temporary fix if the water source remains.
For the patch itself, do not dry brush or vacuum it, as this disperses spores. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the AC vent. Scrub the affected surface with a mixture of detergent and water. A solution of diluted white vinegar can be effective for non-porous surfaces. Allow the area to dry completely using fans and a dehumidifier, which is crucial here. Given the children's persistent cough and the size of the infestation (behind a large wardrobe), professional assessment is strongly recommended. Hidden mold within wall cavities or the AC system is common in villas here and can significantly impact air quality. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent and identify the species, as some types like Aspergillus are more problematic. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC is serviced regularly to manage humidity levels indoors, ideally keeping it below 60%. Improve air circulation by moving furniture slightly away from walls. For a permanent solution in a climate like ours, resolving the underlying construction moisture issue is essential. |
