Safest way to remove mold with kids coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I’ve just found patches of black and green mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this villa in Al Barsha for two years and never had an issue before. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this without putting my family at risk?

The coughing is likely related, as mold spores are respiratory irritants. With visible growth and symptoms present, this requires immediate and careful action.

First, address the humidity source. The mold behind the wardrobe is almost certainly due to condensation from the exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai villas during humid periods. Move the furniture away from the wall to improve air circulation. Ensure your AC is running consistently and check that the humidity setting is around 50-55%, as this helps control moisture.

For removal, do not dry brush or use a household vacuum, as this will aerosolize spores. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with a detergent solution or isopropyl alcohol to wipe the area, then dry it thoroughly with a separate dry cloth. Dispose of all cleaning materials immediately in a sealed bag.

However, with children already coughing, the safest approach is a professional inspection. The visible patch may only be part of the problem, as mold can grow inside wall cavities from unseen condensation. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping and often air quality testing to identify all affected areas and spore types. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold removal, which includes containment of the work area and use of HEPA filtration devices to prevent cross-contamination.

After remediation, the long-term solution is controlling indoor humidity. Consistently running your AC, using stand-alone dehumidifiers in problem rooms, and ensuring your villa’s exterior walls are properly sealed are the most effective preventative measures.
