Is black mold from my AC vent a health risk?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing along the edges of our bedroom AC vent in our Jumeirah apartment. It started getting worse after the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I wipe it away, it just comes back darker. Is this a health risk and what's the proper way to get rid of it for good?

Black mold from an AC vent is a health risk, particularly for children and those with respiratory sensitivities like asthma. The primary concern is the constant release of mold spores directly into the air you breathe, which can cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The high humidity, especially during summer months, creates condensation inside AC units. This moisture, combined with dust and organic debris, provides an ideal environment for mold to thrive inside the ductwork, not just on the visible vent edges.

Wiping the visible growth is a temporary fix. The root colony is almost certainly inside the unit and the ducts, which is why it returns darker and more widespread. For a persistent problem like this, a professional inspection is necessary to assess the full extent of the contamination inside the system.

Proper remediation involves more than just cleaning the vent cover. The entire internal evaporator coil, drip pan, and accessible ductwork must be professionally cleaned with specialized biocides. The system should then be treated with a protective coating to inhibit future growth. Finally, addressing the underlying humidity issue with proper AC maintenance and potentially a dehumidifier is key to preventing recurrence.

Given your children's symptoms, a lab test to identify the specific mold species can be valuable to understand the potential risk level. For a confirmed infestation inside the system, hiring a company that provides before-and-after testing to verify the air quality has been restored is the most reliable solution.
