Black mold in bedroom: DIY or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been extra humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to get rid of it myself, or should I call my landlord first?

In Dubai's climate, that black spot pattern behind furniture is a common sign of condensation and mold growth, often from the wall being colder than the room's air due to year-round AC use. The high humidity we've had recently accelerates this.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt DIY cleaning. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover sprayed on the surface, left for 15 minutes, then scrubbed away can be effective. However, simply cleaning the surface is often a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed. The wall cavity itself may be damp. Legally, your landlord is responsible for resolving the underlying cause of the dampness that led to the mold, such as checking for a hidden pipe leak or addressing insufficient insulation in the external wall. They are also responsible for the remediation of the damage. You should notify them in writing immediately. For a spreading patch behind a wardrobe, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent within the wall and identify the exact moisture source. This is not just about cleaning what you see. A proper assessment can determine if it's a simple condensation issue or something more serious, and a lab test can identify the mold species, which informs the correct remediation protocol. This documented evidence is also crucial for communicating effectively with your landlord about the necessary repairs. |
