Can I remove large mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s a large dark patch that appeared after that really humid week we had last month. I’m trying to figure out if I can tackle this myself with a vinegar spray or if I absolutely need to call in a professional cleaning service for something this big.

For a patch larger than one square meter, especially in a bedroom with health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. The visible growth is likely just the surface portion; the underlying moisture has probably penetrated the building materials, which requires specialized techniques to address completely.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to regrow quickly if the source moisture isn't eliminated. A DIY approach like vinegar can surface-clean a very small area, but it won't address the root cause or the hyphae (root structures) deep within drywall or plaster. Improper cleaning can also aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory irritation.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for mold remediation in dwellings, focusing on containment, removal of contaminated materials, and moisture control—standards that are difficult for a homeowner to meet safely. Given the cough symptoms, a professional inspection that includes air quality testing is the most prudent first step. This will identify the species and confirm if the bedroom air is affected. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the specific data needed to guide an effective remediation plan and verify it was successful.
