How to safely remove bathroom mold in a windowless Dubai shower?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black and greenish mold spreading along the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s gotten much worse since the weather got more humid last month, and I’m worried about my family breathing it in. What’s the most effective and safe way to remove this mold for good, considering our Dubai bathroom has no window?

Bathroom mold in a windowless Dubai shower is extremely common due to the high ambient humidity and constant condensation from hot showers. The most effective removal starts with identifying the moisture source—it’s often inadequate ventilation.

For surface mold on grout, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar applied for 15 minutes before scrubbing can be effective. For more persistent growth, a diluted chlorine bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) applied with a brush will kill surface spores. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or chemical fumes. Never mix bleach with other cleaners, especially ammonia.

The critical step is to keep the area bone dry after use. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering. If the fan is weak or old, upgrading to a higher-capacity model is a worthwhile investment. Wiping down the walls and floor with a squeegee immediately after use removes the standing water that mold needs to grow. A portable dehumidifier can also measurably reduce the humidity level in the enclosed space.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or if it has a fuzzy texture and penetrates deep into the grout, the issue may be more serious. This can indicate hidden moisture within the wall or behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly air testing is advised to assess the extent and type of mold, as some species require more targeted remediation approaches.
