How to safely clean mold and test for allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having a lot of allergy symptoms lately, and I’m starting to worry it’s from mold. I’ve noticed a few small black spots behind the dresser in their bedroom, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It’s been so humid since the weather changed last month and I think the moisture is getting trapped there. What’s the best way to safely clean this and test if it’s the reason they’re sick?

Small black spots on an outside wall in a Jumeirah villa are a classic sign of condensation mould, often from the temperature difference between our humid outdoor air and the AC-cooled interior. This trapped moisture creates an ideal environment for mould growth.

For cleaning a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the spots with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate the lungs. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning. However, cleaning only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem or what may be hidden inside the wall cavity.

The connection to your children's allergy symptoms is very plausible. Mould spores are a common irritant, causing congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes. The only way to confirm if the mould is the specific allergen affecting them is through testing. A surface sample from the cleaned area can be cultured in a lab to identify the species, which determines its potential health impacts. More importantly, an air quality test that compares spore counts in the children's bedroom to the outdoor air is the definitive way to see if the indoor environment is contaminated.

Given the symptoms and the location on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of the dampness—whether it's a minor thermal bridge or something more significant—and assess if mould has spread behind the drywall. Remediation is only successful once the moisture entry point is sealed.
