Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY removal or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall where it meets the floor. It's been humid lately and I think it might be spreading. I’m really worried about my family’s health, especially my toddler who sleeps in the next room. What’s the most effective way to safely remove this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small patch (under one square foot), DIY removal can be effective if done safely. First, contain the area by sealing the closet off from the rest of the room with plastic sheeting. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part bleach to ten parts water. Allow it to dry completely. Address the moisture source—this is often a small water leak from an AC condensation line or a lack of ventilation. Run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure the closet door is left ajar to improve airflow.

However, given its location on a wall where it meets the floor, the mold may be growing due to a hidden leak or from water wicking up from the slab, which is a more serious issue. If the mold returns after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you suspect hidden growth inside the wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem. For families with toddlers or anyone with respiratory sensitivities, erring on the side of caution is wise. A professional remediation company can properly contain the area to prevent spores from spreading during removal and verify the cleanup is complete with post-remediation testing from an accredited lab.
