How to permanently remove mold from bedroom corner??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back in the corner of our master bedroom. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and I’ve wiped it down twice since the weather cooled down in November, but it just reappears a few weeks later. What’s the best way to treat this permanently so it stops coming back?

The mold in your bedroom corner is returning because you're treating the symptom, not the source. In Dubai's climate, this is almost always a condensation issue caused by a thermal bridge—a cold spot where the wall meets the outside air, leading to moisture buildup as your AC runs.

First, stop wiping it with bleach or conventional cleaners. This only removes the visible stain, not the root cause, and can push spores deeper into the porous material. For a temporary measure before a permanent fix, use a solution of distilled white vinegar; it can help kill surface mold without encouraging regrowth as quickly.

The permanent solution requires two steps: fixing the moisture and then the mold. The moisture is likely from a poorly insulated wall or a leak in the hidden HVAC ductwork serving that room. You need a professional inspection to identify the exact source—this is not a DIY diagnosis. They will use a thermal imaging camera to find the cold spot and a moisture meter to confirm the dampness.

Once the source is found, remediation involves correcting the insulation or sealing the ductwork. Only then should the mold itself be professionally remediated. This means physically removing the contaminated section of drywall or plaster, HEPA-vacuuming the area, and treating it with antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth. Simply painting over it or wiping it will fail every time.

Given that your children are coughing, this is a sign the issue is established and airborne spore levels may be elevated. A proper inspection and remediation will resolve the root cause and improve your indoor air quality.
