DIY mold removal or professional help for Dubai Marina apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall and it's gotten worse since the recent humidity. I'm worried about my family's health and the cost. For a small area like this in a Dubai Marina apartment, is it something I can handle myself with a store-bought spray, or should I definitely call a professional company for an inspection and quote?

The high humidity in Dubai Marina apartments creates ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in closets and behind furniture where airflow is restricted. For a small patch (under one square foot) that you've discovered on a surface, DIY removal can be attempted with caution.

Use a dedicated mold removal cleaner or a solution of diluted white vinegar. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or contact with skin. After cleaning, the area must be kept completely dry; a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the closet is essential to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, since this mold is on a wall and has been growing behind boxes, it's critical to determine the moisture source. The wall itself could be harboring moisture from a small internal leak or condensation from an AC pipe within the wall cavity. If the mold returns after a thorough DIY cleaning, this indicates an ongoing moisture problem you cannot see.

For any recurring mold, or if the area is larger than a square foot, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water intrusion, which is the only way to achieve a permanent solution. A reputable company will also be able to conduct air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is important for understanding any potential health risks, especially for families.
