black mold in bedroom: DIY removal or call Dubai pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It must have been growing hidden behind some storage boxes. I'm really worried because my youngest has been having allergy-like symptoms lately. What is the most effective and safe way to remove this ourselves, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai?

Given Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use, hidden mold growth like this is common. The location on a wall corner suggests a possible condensation issue from the AC or a small leak.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, DIY removal can be effective if you address the moisture source. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a microfiber cloth and a detergent solution—avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Dry the area completely with a fan. Crucially, move boxes away from walls to improve air circulation and prevent this from recurring. However, given your child's allergy symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch may only be a fraction of the problem; mold can grow inside wall cavities or the AC system itself, spreading spores throughout the room. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the true moisture source and assess the full extent. They should provide a lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is vital for understanding potential health risks and confirming the cleanup was successful. In many Dubai villas, the root cause is a poorly insulated external wall causing condensation or a leak from an adjacent bathroom. Without fixing this, the mold will return. For health concerns and hidden growth, a professional assessment is the safest course. |
