How to treat black mold on wall behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah apartment has these black, fuzzy patches that we just discovered when we were deep cleaning. It’s been extra humid the last few weeks and the room has felt damp. What’s the best way to treat this ourselves to stop it from spreading before we call in a professional?

Black mold growth behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation and assess the full extent.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root moisture problem. Scrub the area with a stiff brush and the vinegar solution, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. The room must be kept dry; run a dehumidifier or your AC continuously to maintain humidity below 60%.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or has a musty odor, this is a sign of a more serious moisture issue within the wall cavity. In such cases, DIY cleaning is a temporary fix. The underlying cause, often a hidden condensation leak from an AC pipe or external water seepage, must be professionally identified and resolved to prevent regrowth.

Given the damp feeling you describe, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to rule out a larger problem. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall. For health safety and to ensure the mold is completely remediated according to Dubai Municipality standards, hiring a certified company is the most effective course of action.
