How to permanently stop mold near AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that keeps coming back in the corner of our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading along the wall near the AC vent after this past humid season. I bleach it away but it always returns within a few weeks.
What’s the permanent solution to stop this mold from recurring, especially since it seems linked to the AC?

The recurring mold indicates a moisture source isn't being addressed; bleaching only removes the visible growth. In Dubai's climate, the most common cause is condensation from your AC system. The cold air from the vent is likely hitting a warm surface on that wall, creating constant dampness that mold spores in the air use to regrow.
A permanent fix requires a two-step approach. First, identify and eliminate the moisture. This often means an HVAC technician should check that your AC unit is correctly sized and calibrated for the space, ensuring the supply air temperature isn't too cold. They should also verify that the insulation around the AC ductwork, particularly inside the ceiling void, is intact and preventing condensation. Second, the affected area must be properly remediated. Simply wiping it spreads spores. Professionals will contain the area, remove any contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, and use specialized antimicrobial treatments to clean the structure. For a case linked to child health symptoms, a lab test to identify the mold type is advisable to understand the potential irritants. Finally, to prevent recurrence, improve air circulation in that corner and consider using a dehumidifier to maintain indoor humidity below 50%, as recommended by Dubai Municipality guidelines for indoor air quality. Addressing the root cause—the condensation—is the only way to stop it from coming back. |
