Urgent: black mold in closet needs immediate professional help?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get these black speckles on the back wall and our clothes have a faint damp smell. It's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a couple of weeks ago. Given how quickly it seems to be spreading, is this something I need to call a professional to deal with immediately this weekend, or can it wait until I get someone to look at it next week?

Yes, this warrants immediate professional assessment. The combination of rapid spread, visible black speckling, and a musty odour on clothing indicates an active moisture problem that is feeding mould growth. In Dubai's high humidity, interior wall cavities can develop condensation issues that are not always visible but create ideal conditions for mould.

Given the speed, the source is likely a significant condensation problem within the wall or a hidden leak from adjacent plumbing or an AC condensate drain line. Spores from this type of growth can contaminate your HVAC system and spread to other rooms. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and only temporarily removes surface discolouration without addressing the root moisture cause.

A professional inspection will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source of water intrusion behind the wall. They can then advise on the necessary remediation steps, which typically involve controlled removal of affected materials and addressing the moisture source. For health reasons, especially if anyone has allergies or respiratory sensitivities, it is advisable to keep the closet closed and avoid disturbing the area until it can be properly assessed. The sooner the moisture source is identified and stopped, the more contained and manageable the remediation will be.
