Black shower mold in Dubai: DIY or professional fix?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for a few months now, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it keeps coming back. We’re in an older villa in Al Barsha and I’m worried it’s gotten behind the walls. Is this something I can handle myself with a good cleaner from ACE Hardware, or should I just call a professional company for an inspection and quote? What’s a realistic price range for a proper mold remediation job for a single bathroom here in Dubai?

Black spots in shower grout are almost always mold, and Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for it to thrive. If bleach scrubbing only removes the surface stain but it returns, the mold's root structure (hyphae) has penetrated the porous grout.

For a small, surface-level area, a dedicated grout cleaner from a hardware store and improved ventilation can manage it. However, your description of an older villa and concern about it being behind the walls is a significant red flag. The constant moisture from showers can seep through cracked or aged grout, feeding mold growth on the wall structure itself, which is a health risk and can cause material damage.

In this case, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to non-destructively assess what's happening inside the wall cavity. Remediation cost isn't fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the hidden damage. A small job addressing only surface grout is one thing, but a full remediation involving removing tiles to treat and dry the wall structure behind them is a more involved process. The only way to get an accurate scope and cost is to have the situation properly diagnosed.
