Safely remove black mold with asthma at home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found in the corner of their bedroom closet. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. I'm really worried about their health, especially my youngest who has asthma. What's the safest and fastest way to get rid of it myself without putting my family at risk?

Black mold in a Dubai villa closet is a serious concern, especially with a child who has asthma. The high humidity here, combined with condensation from year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for it. Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold will release a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins into the air, which can severely aggravate respiratory conditions.

The safest course is immediate containment and professional assessment. Keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated, but avoid using the AC in that room as it could spread spores. A certified mold inspector can identify the moisture source—often a small leak or condensation from an AC duct—and test to confirm the species. This is critical, as not all black-colored mold is the toxic Stachybotrys type, but with asthma present, any species is a significant risk.

For remediation, the Dubai Municipality has guidelines that professionals follow for containment, removal, and disposal. Proper remediation involves sealing the area with plastic sheeting, using HEPA air scrubbers, and technicians in PPE to safely remove the contaminated materials. After removal, the underlying cause must be fixed to prevent it from returning. Given the health vulnerability, a professional inspection is strongly advised to ensure the environment is safe for your children.
