Should we call a mold inspector for closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a hidden AC leak. It's been getting worse since the weather got more humid. I'm handy and want to just clean it with bleach myself, but my wife is worried it's a bigger problem. Should we call a professional mold inspector in Dubai or is this a simple DIY job?

In Dubai's climate, that hidden AC leak is almost certainly the source, and humidity will continue to fuel the mold growth. While a small, surface-level patch might be manageable yourself, a few factors specific to your situation suggest a professional inspection is the prudent choice.

The primary concern is the leak itself. Simply cleaning the visible mold does nothing to address the moisture source, guaranteeing it will return. An inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact location of the leak behind the wall, which is crucial for a permanent fix. Furthermore, what you see is often just the tip of the iceberg; the mold can spread inside the wall cavity or under flooring.

For a health assessment, a DIY bleach clean is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall and does not address the root structure of the mold. It can also aggravate the problem by releasing a high number of spores into the air during scrubbing. A proper inspection includes air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species present. This is key, as it determines if the mold is merely a nuisance type or one that produces mycotoxins, informing the necessary safety precautions for remediation.

Given the progression you've described and its location from a suspected AC leak, the most effective course is to have a certified inspector assess the full extent. They will provide a protocol for the leak repair and safe remediation, which you could then choose to handle yourself if the contamination is confirmed to be limited.
