How to safely clean black mold in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the bottom corner of the wall behind our sofa in the living room of our villa in Al Barsha. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked last month. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or is this a job for a professional?

Small patches of black mold on non-porous surfaces like tiles can often be cleaned yourself. For a wall in a humid villa, the approach depends on the wall material and the mold's extent.

First, identify the surface. If it's a painted drywall or plaster, the mold may have penetrated, making DIY cleaning a temporary fix. For a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using fans and a dehumidifier.

However, given the location behind a sofa and the high humidity, the root cause is likely condensation from the AC or a hidden moisture issue. Simply cleaning the surface won't prevent it from returning. In Dubai's climate, where AC creates constant temperature differentials, condensation behind furniture is common.

For a recurring patch on a wall, especially if it's larger than a square meter, professional assessment is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to find the source of dampness—whether it's a small leak, rising damp, or condensation—and take a tape lift sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This identifies the correct remediation protocol, which for penetrative mold often involves removing and replacing the affected drywall section to ensure it's truly resolved.
