First step for black mold in Dubai AC duct?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's the AC. I just pulled the vent cover off in our Jumeirah Park villa's main bedroom and the inside of the duct is completely black and fuzzy. What's the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection here in Dubai?

Stop using that AC unit immediately and close the door to the room to contain the spores. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mold can release a large number of spores into your home's air.

The first step for a proper inspection is a professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and year-round AC use, this level of visible growth indicates a significant moisture issue, likely from condensation inside the ducts. A certified inspector will use a borescope to visually assess the full extent of contamination inside the ductwork without further disturbance. The critical next step is air and surface sampling. This involves taking samples from inside the duct and the room's air, which are then analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab. Only a lab culture can identify the specific mold species (like Aspergillus, Cladosporium, or Stachybotrys) and confirm if it is producing mycotoxins, which is essential information for understanding the health risk to your family and for planning the correct remediation strategy.

This diagnostic approach is vital because the visible growth is just part of the problem; the spores will have circulated throughout your home via the AC system. A proper inspection provides the documented evidence needed to address the root cause with your landlord or building management and ensures any subsequent cleanup is based on verified data, not guesswork.
