Is this black mold in my Dubai AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the summer started and I'm worried it's from our AC units. I just pulled back the insulation tape around the vent in my daughter's room and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the wall behind it. We're in a villa in Jumeirah that's a bit older. Is this the dangerous black mold I keep hearing about, and who in Dubai can I call to test this properly?

The black substance you found is very likely mold, given Dubai's high humidity and the condensation that forms around AC vents in older villas. While "black mold" is a common term, it refers to many species—only some produce mycotoxins. Stachybotrys chartarum is the most concerning type, but it's less common than Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which still cause significant respiratory irritation.

Your children's persistent coughing is a strong indicator that this mold is affecting indoor air quality. Mold spores become airborne through the AC system, circulating throughout the home. This is a serious health concern that requires professional assessment, not a DIY cleanup.

You need a certified mold inspector who will take air and surface samples, then have them analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab. This is the only way to identify the exact species and concentration, which determines the remediation protocol. In Dubai, look for a provider that follows DM and DHA guidelines and can produce a full lab report with species identification. Avoid companies that offer to clean without first providing this diagnostic evidence. The inspection will map the moisture source—often a leaking condensation drain pipe or inadequate insulation—which must be repaired to prevent recurrence.
