How to permanently fix recurring mold in humid Dubai weather?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back on the ceiling of our master bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha. It’s worst in the corner near the window, and it reappears every few months even after I scrub it off with bleach. What’s the permanent fix to stop this from happening, especially with our humid weather?

Recurring mold in a corner is a classic sign of a persistent moisture source, not just surface humidity. Bleach only removes the visible stain; it doesn't address the root cause or kill the hyphae (roots) deep within the material.
The permanent fix requires a two-step approach: eliminating the moisture and remediating the contaminated materials. In Dubai's climate, the moisture is likely from one of two sources. First, check for a hidden plumbing leak from an upstairs bathroom or AC condensate drain line blockage, which is extremely common in villas. Second, and more likely for a corner near a window, is thermal bridging. That concrete corner acts as a "thermal bridge," where the hot outside air meets your cooled interior air, causing significant condensation inside the wall itself. Scrubbing is no longer sufficient. You need a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source using tools like a thermal imaging camera and moisture meters. They can pinpoint if the condensation is inside the wall cavity. The remediation must involve removing the affected plasterboard or paint, treating the underlying wall structure with antimicrobial solutions, and repairing the area with mold-resistant drywall and primers. Finally, ensure the room's AC is correctly sized and running consistently to manage humidity levels, as our humid weather requires continuous dehumidification. For health concerns, a lab test can identify the mold species to better understand potential irritants. |
