How to safely remove black mold behind bathroom vanity?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally pulled back the wooden vanity today and found a bunch of black mold on the wall behind it and the pipes. It’s been so humid lately that I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I be reporting this to my landlord first?

Black mold behind a vanity is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself safely. First, report the finding to your landlord immediately, as this is a habitability issue they are typically responsible for addressing under Dubai rental regulations.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Scrub the area thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and does not kill the root of the mold. After cleaning, let the area dry completely using a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, given its location behind a vanity and the persistent musty smell, the mold is likely more extensive than visible. It often spreads inside walls. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and identify the moisture source, which could be a leaking pipe or condensation. In many Jumeirah apartments, the underlying cause is chronic high humidity that standard AC use cannot manage alone. A proper remediation plan from a certified provider will include containment, removal, and addressing the humidity source to prevent recurrence.
