How urgent is mold treatment for my kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has had this persistent damp smell since the weather turned humid a few weeks ago. I finally moved their wardrobe today and found a patch of black and green mold, about the size of a dinner plate, spreading on the wall behind it. Given how quickly this seems to have grown and with my children sleeping in there every night, how urgent is it to get this professionally treated?

Given the size of the growth and that it's in a child's bedroom, this is a situation that warrants prompt professional attention. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the constant cooling from air conditioning creates ideal conditions for mold, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces like behind furniture. A patch the size of a dinner plate indicates a significant moisture issue that needs to be diagnosed.

The urgency stems from two factors: the potential health effects and the structural concern. For children, continuous exposure to mold spores can irritate the respiratory system, potentially worsening allergies or asthma and causing persistent congestion. The speed of growth also suggests an active water source, such as condensation from an AC vent, a minor pipe leak in the wall, or moisture wicking from the ground. This will not resolve on its own and will continue to spread.

Immediate steps you can take are to improve air circulation in the room by moving the wardrobe away from the wall and using a dehumidifier. However, scrubbing visible mold yourself often disperses spores deeper into the room and the AC system. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact species and, more importantly, the root cause of the moisture. In Dubai, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure it's properly contained and removed, not just surface-cleaned, to prevent rapid regrowth.
