How to permanently stop mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the mold that keeps coming back in our master bedroom closet. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I noticed it started after the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago. I wipe it away with vinegar every few weeks, but it just comes back darker on the back wall. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this for good?

Mold recurrence in a humid climate like Dubai indicates a persistent moisture source that surface cleaning won't fix. The back wall of your closet is likely a cold surface where condensation forms due to the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid outdoor air, creating a constant food source for mold.

The most effective long-term solution requires a two-part approach: correcting the moisture issue and properly remediating the existing growth. First, address the condensation. Improve air circulation in the closet by installing a small battery-operated vent fan or leaving the door ajar. Ensure your villa's AC is properly sized and maintained, as an overworked unit may not be effectively dehumidifying the air. Check that the room's insulation, particularly on that external wall, is sufficient to prevent the cold bridge effect that causes condensation.

Second, vinegar only removes the visible surface mold, leaving the root structure (hyphae) intact within the porous wall material. This is why it returns stronger. For a permanent fix, the affected area must be properly remediated. This involves physically removing the contaminated porous material (like drywall or insulation) if the infestation is deep, cleaning the underlying structure with appropriate antimicrobial agents, and sealing it before replacing with new, clean materials.

In villas, hidden leaks from AC drain lines running through walls are also a common culprit. Given the recurrence and your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the mold growth, which is often more widespread than it appears. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide definitive identification and post-remediation verification testing to ensure the problem is truly resolved.
