How to remove damp smell from closet without visible mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I store in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago and it's just getting worse, even though I never see any visible black spots. What's the most effective way to get rid of the smell and prevent mold from growing there for good?

That damp smell is almost certainly hidden mold growth, a common issue in Dubai closets due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The leather items are absorbing moisture and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) from the air, which is what you're smelling.
First, remove everything from the closet. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner. Leather items need immediate attention; wipe them down with a leather-safe disinfectant and allow them to dry completely away from the closet, preferably in a well-ventilated area with lower humidity. Do not put them back until the source is fixed. The smell indicates an active moisture source. Check for a nearby AC vent causing condensation or a leak in the wall from a bathroom or kitchen on the other side. The most effective permanent solution is to identify and eliminate this moisture entry point. Running a small dehumidifier or a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier bag inside the closet can help maintain a dry environment and prevent recurrence. If the smell persists after cleaning and addressing moisture, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use a borescope to look inside walls and moisture meters to find hidden dampness that isn't visible. In many cases here, the mold is growing on the back of the drywall or within the insulation, which requires targeted remediation to solve permanently. |
