How to treat recurring mold from AC in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom, right where the wall meets the ceiling. It seems to have gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I'm really worried it's mold and that it might be spreading inside the walls. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves to stop it from coming back, and should we be concerned about our AC unit being the cause?

Recurring mold at the wall-ceiling junction, especially in a humid Al Barsha villa, strongly suggests a condensation issue, often from the AC. The cold air from the supply vent hits that surface, creating a damp microclimate that mold spores love.

First, identify and address the moisture source. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth dampened with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water); avoid bleach as it only removes the colour, not the organism. Then, ensure your AC's temperature isn't set too low. A very cold setting increases condensation on walls and within the ductwork. Keep it around 23-24°C to reduce this thermal shock. Improve air circulation in that corner with a small fan to prevent stagnant, humid air from settling.

However, if the mold returns after cleaning and adjusting the AC, the issue is likely inside the wall or the AC system itself. The mold on the surface is often just the visible part of a larger colony growing within the cavity due to a slow leak or from the AC's evaporator drip pan, which can clog and overflow. For recurring cases, a professional inspection is critical. They use borescopes to check inside wall cavities and perform air and surface sampling to identify the species and source. Verifiable remediation requires fixing the moisture source, proper containment during removal, and post-clearance testing to ensure it's truly resolved, not just hidden.
