Best long-term solution for bathroom mold in high humidity?« Back to Previous Page
|
My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has no windows and the walls behind the vanity are starting to show black mold spots again, even though I just scrubbed it all away a few months ago. The humidity here is just relentless, and I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle with the ventilation fan that seems too weak. What is the most effective long-term solution, like a specific dehumidifier or a particular type of paint, to finally stop this from coming back?

The root cause is persistent high humidity, and scrubbing only removes the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem. For a long-term solution in a windowless bathroom, you need to address ventilation, surface protection, and moisture control simultaneously.
First, upgrade that ventilation fan. The current one is likely undersized. Install a fan with a higher CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating, ideally one with a humidistat that automatically turns on when humidity rises. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Surface treatment is critical. Standard paint will not suffice. Use a dedicated mould-resistant primer (like Zinsser Perma-White or similar) on all cleaned walls, followed by a high-quality mould-inhibiting paint. These contain antimicrobial agents that prevent spores from taking hold. For relentless Dubai humidity, a small desiccant dehumidifier designed for bathrooms can be highly effective. These units are more efficient than refrigerant models in our climate's high heat and are ideal for small, enclosed spaces. Place it in the bathroom to run intermittently and maintain humidity below 60%, the threshold for mould growth. Since the mould is recurring behind the vanity, a professional inspection is wise. There could be a hidden leak from plumbing or condensation within the wall cavity that needs to be identified and remediated to truly solve the problem. |
