Urgent black mold in bedroom: DIY or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading quickly because my allergies have been acting up. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

The UAE's high humidity, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in closets and behind furniture where air doesn't circulate. A small patch discovered behind boxes suggests it's been growing for some time, and your worsening allergies are a strong indicator it's affecting your indoor air quality.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a solution of distilled white vinegar, which is effective against many common molds. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the vinegar sit for an hour, then wipe it dry. Immediately address the moisture source—this is often condensation from an AC duct or an exterior wall. Improve air flow in the closet and consider using a moisture absorber.

However, if the mold returns after cleaning, if the area is larger than one square meter, or if it has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the back of the boxes, professional assessment is needed. Remediation here involves containing the area to prevent spores from spreading during cleaning, which is not a DIY task. A professional inspection can identify the exact species and the root moisture cause, which is critical for a permanent solution. In many cases, the underlying issue is a small leak or inadequate insulation causing condensation, which must be fixed first.
