How to remove mold behind furniture in humid Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to get rid of this properly without having to throw out the furniture?

Move the furniture away from the wall immediately to allow air circulation and prevent the mould from spreading to the wardrobe itself. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue in rooms with high humidity and poor airflow, especially when furniture is placed against exterior walls that can experience condensation from our year-round AC use.
For a small area, you can clean it yourself with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, but be cautious as bleach can damage certain paints. The key is to dry the wall completely afterwards using a fan or dehumidifier; merely killing the mould is not enough if the moisture remains. However, since the spots are spreading and behind furniture where moisture was trapped, the issue is likely more extensive than it appears. The wall's interior may be affected. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full scope and identify the moisture source, which could be a minor condensation issue or something more significant. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow international standards like the IICRC S520 for proper containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. Proper remediation focuses on correcting the humidity problem first. Until that's solved, the mould will return. For furniture, a professional assessment can determine if it can be cleaned on-site or needs to be moved to a controlled environment for treatment, which can often save it from being discarded. |
