How to treat black mold and prevent it with a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold I just found in the corner of our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been so humid lately and that back wall always feels cold. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this spreading behind the shoe racks.
What’s the most effective way to treat this myself and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

Black mold growth in a Jumeirah villa is a common issue due to the high humidity and condensation on cold walls from constant AC use. For a small, surface-level patch you've found, a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to three parts water can be effective; apply it with a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe dry. Never use bleach, as it only lightens the color and does not kill the roots, leaving the mold to return.
However, because this is behind furniture and has been spreading unnoticed, there is a high likelihood it has penetrated the wall material itself, such as the drywall or plaster. In such cases, DIY cleaning is often insufficient and can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your children's cough. A professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of the moisture damage behind the wall and identify the mold species. This is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. To prevent recurrence, a dehumidifier is essential. For a bedroom or closet space, a compact unit with a capacity of 10-12 litres per day is typically adequate. Look for a model with a built-in hygrometer that allows you to set a target humidity level; maintaining indoor relative humidity between 45% and 55% will make it very difficult for mold to grow. Ensure the dehumidifier has an auto-drain function or a large enough tank that you won't have to empty it constantly. The root cause is the cold wall, so also improve air circulation in that closet and consider having the villa's insulation checked to reduce condensation. |
