How to stop closet mold after Dubai fog?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the outer wall. I first noticed it after that heavy fog we had a couple of weeks ago, and now I’m seeing tiny black spots on some of my leather bags and shoes stored in there. I run a dehumidifier in the main room, but it doesn't seem to help the closet. What’s the best way to stop this from spreading and prevent it from coming back next winter?

The damp smell and black spots are almost certainly mold growth, a common issue in Dubai after heavy fog events. The fog dramatically increases ambient humidity, and your closet's outer wall is likely a "cold bridge" where condensation forms unseen behind your items. Your dehumidifier in the main room isn't effective because the closet is a sealed, high-humidity microclimate.
First, remove all items from the closet immediately. For leather goods, wipe them down with a dilute vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) and allow them to dry completely away from the affected area. Visually inspect the wall and any shelving. The tiny black spots are the visible colony; the underlying fungal network (mycelium) is likely more extensive inside the wall or under the paint. To stop the spread, you must address the moisture source. Wipe all interior surfaces with a microfiber cloth and a mold-inhibiting cleaner, but avoid bleach as it only surface-treats and doesn't prevent recurrence. The core issue is that the closet's environment is not being conditioned. Leave the closet empty and the door open for several days with a small fan pointed inside to circulate dry air. Consider a small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet during high-humidity periods, as these are more effective in enclosed spaces than compressor models. For prevention, you need to equalize the temperature and humidity between the closet and the air-conditioned room. The most effective long-term solution is to improve air circulation into the closet. Leave the closet door ajar a few inches whenever possible. If there's a gap under the door, ensure it's not blocked. For a more permanent fix, have an HVAC technician install a small vent or grille in the closet door or the wall connecting to the main room. This allows your apartment's AC, which dehumidifies as it cools, to manage the closet's climate. Given the location on an outer wall and the fact the problem started after a weather event, a professional inspection is wise. They can use a moisture meter to confirm the wall is dry and a borescope to check for insulation gaps or hidden condensation within the wall cavity that could lead to a major recurrence. In many Jumeirah apartments, this is a seasonal issue that requires these specific climate-control adjustments. |
